Is the Franchise Disclosure Register a Waste of Time?

Posted by Elizabeth Gore-Jones on 31 May 2024

The Franchise Disclosure Register has been operational since November 2023.

The question now arises: Was the creation of the register a waste of time and money?

The lack of searchability of the register – even when you type in an exact name for a franchisor, you will be lucky if you find them! – means that there are significant challenges in just navigating the register.

If you are lucky enough to actually find the franchise system you are searching, then the information contained on each individual franchisor’s listing really does not assist franchisees.

If a franchisee is attempting to compare franchise systems in similar industries, then it is really like comparing apples with oranges due to the lack of directions for franchisors on the register about how the information is to be presented.

Unfortunately, the Franchise Disclosure Register promised so much but has delivered so little.
